The Philadelphia Zoo is America’s first zoo, opening its gates on July 1, 1874. The 42 acre zoo is home to over 1,300 animals, and over 300 different species. The Philadelphia Zoo has constructed their exhibits to allow guests to be just inches away from their animals. Guests can expect to see a polar bear taking a swim in one of their many deep pools in Bear Country, or will be able to stand face to face with a 500lb tortoise in the Tortoise Trail. There is also the Rare Animal Conservation Center where guests can admire and learn about the many endangered species the Philadelphia Zoo cares for. The Philadelphia Zoo features many rides and activates for the guests to participate in; hop on the back of a camel, ride a Swan Boat on the real Bird Lake, or fly 400 feet above to catch a bird’s-eye view of the zoo in the Channel 6 Zooballon.

Guests are also able to utilize the Philadelphia Zoo Smartphone app. This app can be used before, during, and after your trip! Check out the zoo’s events and parking lots before your trip, and then learn fun facts about the species while you are viewing them. This app also includes a GPS map which can identify your location, and provide concessions and amenities closest to you! Guests have the choice to bring their own concessions and pick one of many picnic areas to dine in.

 The Philadelphia Zoo is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day from 9:30am-5pm.
